Tips for Growing Vegetables Indoors
There are many reasons for wanting to grow your vegetable garden indoors. Some people do it because they live inside the city or in an apartment building and have no outdoor area for gardening. Some people do it for convenience and some for fun, but regardless of the reason, there are some tips and tricks that will help to make your indoor garden a success.
The first thing you should consider is lighting. Most vegetables require full sunlight so unless you have a sunroom or greenhouse you should invest in some artificial light. LED plant grow lights are an excellent source of light for an indoor garden especially an indoor vegetable garden.
However you can choose to use all natural sunlight as opposed to the LED grow light. You just have to choose your growing area carefully in order to get as much direct sunlight as possible and be sure to turn your plants at least once a day. Otherwise the plants will do what plants do and grow toward the sunlight, causing them to bend and the stems to weaken. Also the vegetables will tend to grow only on the sunny side of the plant, which will cause even more bending and perhaps breaking. I prefer LED grow lights, for healthier plants and more vegetables.
The next thing to think about is your containers. I like the self watering kind. You can buy them at most department stores and they’re not very expensive. They allow the plants to take the exact amount of water that they need. Just be sure to keep a spray bottle on hand so that you can mist your plants from time to time. They will love you for it and in turn will produce bigger, healthier vegetables.
Now all you have to do is decide on what potting soil to use and that’s it. You’re on your way to fresh home grown vegetables.
